ICON 3D Printed Homes Receive Mortgage Incentives

ICON, a builder of 3D-printed homes, is getting the attention of mainstream mortgage lenders. Wells Fargo, a major player in mortgage lending in the United States, announced that it would offer incentives to individuals seeking a mortgage to buy a 3D-printed home built by ICON. The company uses advanced 3D printing robotics to construct high quality, affordable homes in short timeframes.

ICON was co-founded by Jason Ballard, Alex La Roux, and Evan Loomis in 2017. Mr. La Roux and Mr. Loomis are also co-founders of TreeHouse, a sustainable home improvement business. The company got its start by raising a $9 million seed round in January 2018. The seed round was backed by D.R. Horton, one of the largest homebuilders in the United States.

ICON has built approximately 250 3D-printed homes to date, which include a mix of residential homes, affordable housing units, and disaster relief projects across the United States and Mexico. For example, the company constructed some 3D printed homes for student housing at Texas A&M University. The company has sold approximately 120 homes to date, primarily in Texas.

A key factor behind ICON’s success is the company’s specialized printing technology. The company’s Vulcan construction system is designed for single-story construction, while its Titan construction system is designed for multi-story buildings. ICON is selling its Titan 3D printers to developers for $899,000. Using low-carbon concrete materials, ICON is able to complete projects using 3D printing technology within a few weeks.

Historically, it has not been easy to obtain traditional mortgage financing to purchase 3D-printed homes. Lenders expressed concerns that 3-D printed homes may not appreciate in value like regular homes. Many lenders were also skeptical about the technology and its ability to become mainstream.

In May 2026, Wells Fargo announced that it will provide a 50-basis point lender credit to individuals purchasing ICON homes. Well Fargo will also be a preferred lender for ICON homes. Having the support of a major mortgage lender provides a huge boost to ICON’s business and the viability of 3D printing technology for building homes at scale.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas, ICON has raised significant amounts of capital from investors in recent years. In August 2020, ICON raised $35 million in a Series A funding round. This was followed just a year later by a $200 million Series B funding round that closed in August 2021. In February 2025, ICON raised a $56 million Series C funding round that was co-led by Norwest Venture Partners and Tiger Global. ICON has an estimated overall valuation of roughly $2 billion.

Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of ICON, is optimistic about the potential for 3D printing to address home affordability challenges. “To address the global housing crisis, something radical and courageous needs to happen,” states Mr. Ballard. “Construction-scale 3D printing is designed to not only deliver high-quality homes faster and more affordably, but fleets of printers can change the way entire communities are built for the better.”

The company recently launched ICON Prime, a division dedicated to government and military partnerships. ICON Prime will focus on specialized construction to serve defense and national security needs.
