Public Transit Platform Via Transportation Makes NYSE Debut in IPO
The initial public offerings (IPOs) of tech companies have had a strong performance in 2025. Via Transportation, a transit technology company based in New York City, made its public debut in September 2025 through an IPO. The company’s Class A common stock is now publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol “VIA”. The IPO raised approximately $490 million, putting Via’s valuation at around $3.5 billion.
Via’s platform provides software and data analytics capabilities to cities, transit agencies, and other organizations. Via partners with existing public mass transit systems to increase commuting efficiency and identify areas of underperformance. For example, public buses often run on fixed schedules without taking into account rider demand patterns. Via’s technology platform can use operational and demographic data to understand changing demand patterns and adapt transit schedules accordingly. Its on-demand routing algorithms leverage machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve efficiency over time.
Via was launched in 2012 by co-founders Daniel Ramot and Oren Shoval. Initially, the company started as a ride-sharing service in New York City, using vehicles labeled with Via’s company logo to facilitate rides. Facing intense competition from larger rivals such as Uber and Lyft, Via eventually decided to shift its focus to providing technological solutions to public transportation agencies and government customers. The goal was to revolutionize public transit services. The company’s management team believed that public transit services needed to be technologically modernized with data insights and algorithms.
Today, Via’s data-driven platform is used in hundreds of cities across over 30 countries. The company’s customers include numerous city and transit agencies. It also has some corporate and university customers. Via reported revenues of approximately $337 million in 2024. However, the company continues to operate at a loss. Revenue is primarily generated through recurring subscriptions fees.
Via’s business model requires understanding complex government systems and funding structures for public transportation networks. While funding for public transportation services tends to come from a combination of local, state, and national sources, implementing changes to transit systems often requires effectively navigating local political dynamics. It also requires Via to provide highly tailored technology solutions to meet the unique needs of particular local transportation networks.
The company is currently led by Daniel Ramot as CEO and Clara Fain as Chief Financial Officer. The leadership team includes individuals with White House and government agency experience.
Daniel Ramot, the company’s co-founder and CEO, stated that the proceeds raised from the IPO may be used for future acquisitions. “We’re not necessarily looking to raise funds to drive operations,” Ramot stated. “There may be an opportunity for us to use the proceeds and the currency of a public stock to make some interesting acquisitions like we did with Remix and Citymapper.”
Via believes there is a large addressable market for its services that remains untapped. The company estimates that its solutions have captured less than 1% of the serviceable addressable market (SAM). With this in mind, Via sees huge growth opportunities in expanding into new markets and forming partnerships with more government agencies.
